Dalton Burger - More Mothers Becoming Self-Employed Career Photographers
Photography is becoming a more popular career choice for self-employed mothers, as a recent survey by NoBS Photo Success reveals. The survey, conducted by this resource for working photographers, found that 80 percent of respondents were juggling family with their photography careers.

More mothers are joining the ranks of self-employed photographers because it provides options for balancing family obligations with professional endeavors. Working as a photographer allows mothers to tailor their work schedules around their family schedules. Working mothers also have resources such as Hybrid Mom, which is a network for working mothers to learn from each other about what works and what doesn't.

A growing number of women are pursuing their own businesses when they find that the other options available to them aren't as flexible and forgiving of family obligations. Photography is one of the career paths which provides a tremendous amount of flexibility and, for many working mothers, fits perfectly with their lifestyle.

Moms in the photography industry by no means have it easy, though. They have to juggle feeding the kids, taking them to school and other activities, cleaning the house, marketing their photography studios and booking portrait sessions, among other things. A delicate balance must be struck in order to maintain organization and sanity.

One respondent in the NoBS Photo Success survey wrote about how she is constantly in a state of multitasking. A healthy perspective, however, seems to keep these mothers going. "The juggling balls get dropped quite often... but they don't get too dirty. Just pick them up, dust them off and continue juggling," said a NoBS Photo Succes member who is also a part-time Australian Air Force officer, student, photographer, and full-time mom.

Mothers who work in photography and other industries seem to find a great deal of satisfaction form their careers, despite the challenges. A recent study cited by U.S. News & World Report found that women who are able to pursue a career as well as have a family are much happier and content in their lives than those who don't work. Having something to call their own gives them a sense of purpose and well being.
